Tales Through Others Eyes 25th March 2017

New Project

In this project we have been told to create artwork with the theme of 'Tales through others eyes', this is pretty much the only criteria (other than the size of the design) for The Cheltenham Illustration Awards competition in which we will be creating artwork for.

For this theme I came up with three different ideas. In the first, I wanted to recreate old famous paintings in the way that Kozyndan recreated 'The Great Wave of Kanagawa' by Hokusai. This would fit the theme as the paintings would be recreated digitally to show what I see through my own eyes.
In my second idea, I wanted to show the perspective of a war veteran who has PTSD, I wanted to create a view of a highstreet from someones eyes but have simple line work depicting a war zone throughout the piece, for instants where there would be people walking, I could place an outline of a soldier shooting or even shouting towards the viewer. This would allow people who are looking at the piece, to know that the character is in a normal environment, but he is experiencing something completely different and very instense compared to the people surrounding him.
My third and last idea was to show a person reacting to something from the view point of the person telling the joke. I liked this idea because I feel it would be very personal depending on who I would decide to use as a reference. Each person will have a different reaction when going from an emotionless face to a state of pure laughter, someones nose may crinkle, another person might look away and other people may cover their face. I wanted to create an animation showing these changes within someones face, through the eyes of the person witnessing the reaction take place.

After a group discussion about mine and other students ideas for this project, I have decided to focus on both my first and last idea, I feel these have the most potential in the sense that I can experiment a lot with the imagery and medias I use. The reason I did not choose the idea about the war veteran with PTSD is because the concept reminded me a lot of my environment animation. I had created a world which switched between normality and a more evil representation of normality, through the characters eyes. The two ideas to me were too similar for this project, however I do still want to try and create the PTSD piece in my spare time as I do feel it is a strong concept.

Although these ideas were originally created for The Cheltenham Illustration Awards, as I can only submit one, the other will be sent into the Adobe Design Achievement Awards, as it does not have any specific criteria for entry and is open to all HE students. This will give me more chances of my work getting noticed and will give me more experience in the world of work as you become part of the ADAA community.

So that I keep on time within this project, I decided to create a timetable to keep me in track of where I should be and what I should be doing during the weeks of this project. I do intend to keep to this timetable if not overpass it at some points. If I do fall behind on some areas, I have gave myself the final week to catch up with anything I may have missed. This will hopefully make my work stronger and less rushed compared to my previous projects.

My goals for this project is to get all of my work completed on time, without rushing and without as much stress that I've felt during the other projects. I want to stay highly motivated, putting more effort into this project than I have in precious, keeping my progress flowing in the weeks to come. Motivation, effort and progress are the three areas which I seem to struggle most with during my tutorials, as each one appears to be linked to another. As this is my last project of the first year, I don't want to be struggling with any of these things, I want it to be as easy and calm as possible.
