Alan Lee
Alan Lee was born August 20th 1947 and is a book illustrator, who
has also worked on movie concepts. After illustrating the trilogy ‘The Lord
of the Rings’, Alan Lee was then asked to create concept designs of Middle
Earth which then had major influences on the settings, designed and chosen, in
all three of the movies.
When he was younger, he had studied art and design and graphics,
but having always been influenced by myth and folklore, he then found his true
calling in illustration, more specifically book illustration.
He does have a certain process when creating his work, first he
will sketch out the scene in pencil then refine the edges. Once happy with the
initial sketch, he will then paint the scene with watercolour. This can make
the setting go from a warm summers day to a cold, damp cave.
I love this artists work because he has quite a
romantic style in his watercolour pieces. With the lack of bold black outlines,
which I commonly use in my own work, I feel it gives his work a more realistic
sense, and it is something that I would like to try in my future work.
Audra Auclair
This is one of my favourite artists online. Her work appeals to me
because she always creates surrealistic pieces. She also tends to use a lot of
materials that I enjoy using, such as ink, watercolour and digital paintings, which is one of the many reasons that attracted me to her work. As I am not as confident with my more traditional designs as of yet,
she is the type of artist I aspire to be as she is still growing herself, and
trying new things in her work.
This piece in particular is supposed to resemble mother nature
looking after her planet, feeding in the oxygen and taking away the bad air.
The design was originally a basic sketch in which the artist reworked digitally
in photoshop. I personally like this piece because of the colour choices.
Whereas the colours she has chosen are normally on the opposite ends of the
spectrum, as she has chosen more pastel versions of the two, the colours do not
seem as harsh, and complement each other very well. I also enjoyed how she did
not use black, but instead used dark brown, this added to the earthly theme of
the piece.
Eran Hilleli - Three and a half seconds about life
This is an animation which is built up of multiple three and a
half second skits, in which the artist describes life in humorous ways by
killing off little black birds.
I enjoy the way in which Eran Hilleli has created this piece.
Usually the thought of birds getting hit by planes or getting crushed by a
snowman’s head, would not normally be classed as funny, however, as Hilleli has
used light colours and combined them with a paper cut out style, it makes the
animation more light hearted, almost making it alright to laugh at the death of
a bird.
This type of animation is something I would like to try and create in the future. I feel it looks very simplistic, but is very quirky. I may try creating an animation of a similar papercut style in my sparetime as a personal project as I would like to see how I could work with the style.
