Tales Through Others Eyes 23rd April 2017

As it has been my Easter holidays for the past two weeks, I did decide to take a little break in amongst that time. I have however kept to my original timetable and I do believe I am currently on track at this moment in time.

In the past two weeks I have:

  • Corrected all areas in which both my tutor and friends had pointed out and suggested. I have sent the current illustration to my tutor, awaiting his response.
  • I have taken photos of my boyfriend as he begins to laugh, showing the changes within his face as he expresses emotion.
  • From these photos I started to digitally sketch out all of the details within my models face, on each and every photo I had taken.
  • In photoshop, I then animated these sketches to see how the piece would flow.
  • As the pieces was slightly laggy, I decided to use the original photos as a guide and freehand in some more frames, inbetweening the key frames which where already there.
  • Once I was happy with the flow of my animation, I then took all of these frames into illustrator to make the line work look smoother. This also helped me correct some of the terrible proportions in my in between frames.
  • When I finally had all of my frames neat and relined, I took them all back into photoshop to start my colouring process. From here I chose to work with a Tomer Hanuka inspired colour palette, based on his clockwork orange print.
  • Although it was a very long colouring process, as I chose to colour each frame individually, one at a time, I finally got all of frames done and I am quite pleased with the outcome. However this may not be its final form, as when I go back to college, my tutor or peer group may have some suggestion of areas which I could improve on.
  • As this piece may be fit to be submitted to the Cheltenham Illustration Awards, I need to change the animation into an illustration. To do this, I have tried taking four key frames, which I believed to show the most emotion/facial transformation, and I have positioned them all in a line, overlaying one another. Although there is something quite appealing about this layout, as you can see the movement and changes withing my models face, there may be another way that I can convey the movement within an illustration. At this moment however, I do not know any other way, so I am going to wait until I get back to college, where I shall ask both my friends and tutor if they have any ideas or suggestions.
As well as doing all of the above, during this time off, I have also completed my artist research file, finally! Although I had kept putting it off, the file did broaden my sights on what I can create, where I can look for inspiration and I can even stay up to date with what is happening in the world of illustration. The research file has also helped me find more artists which appeal to me and my style, such as Colororgy, Lorena Alvarez and many more.

Things I still need to do:
  • Ask my peers and tutor for feedback
  • Make any corrections that they may suggest
  • Print off all of my digital development
  • Print off both final designs
  • Evaluations, both on here and in my book
  • Clean up areas within my blog, mostly in my research.
  • Catch up on anything in which I may have missed.
