This book is a collection of over 150 artists, who have created amazing characters in their own styles and mediums, which have all been showcased and wrapped up into one book. I believe this is an art students dream come true, no matter what area of design you sway to more, whether it be animation, illustration, games design, even fine art, I feel everyone can find inspiration from this book.
Artists I liked
From the whole collection of artists and their designs, I found it very easy to fall in love with a lot of designers characters and creations. The ones that had mostly grabbed my attention were:
Kimiaki yaegashi 72-76
Yomsnil 84-88
Chirs Edser 94-95
Katiana Modestti 138-139
Farshid Monfared 246-247
Nicolas Barrome 308-309
T-Wei 330-332, 359
Moon 166 -167
yoskay yasmamoto 206-211
Each of these artists were diverse from the other, I don't feel I found any artists with a similar style to another. All of these artists (and many more that I have not mentioned) give me a lot of inspiration, whether it is in the style of their work, the process in which they create their designs, or even the concepts behind their pieces. They all inspire me to better my own craft, some day I want to be to be at their level and create work to a similar quality, and until then I will work to improve my own designs so that I can achieve this goal some day.
I have already planned to take inspiration from Katiana Modestti and Farshid Monfared in a future project. We as a class have been told that we will be doing a project, in which we will composite our designs into a video or photo of a realistic setting. I believe Modestti and Monfared would be a great inspiration for this project, as they have done this exact technique in their own creations. I believe the project will give me a chance to learn their processes, as I try to replicate their style and techniques with my own characters.
I would not have discovered these artists if I had not gotten this book, so as I had stated before I feel this book is a great source of inspiration, and can be used across any form of design.
Artists I didn't like
This was such a hard task to find, as I did not really dislike any of the artwork, even if the artists designs didn't appeal to me, I was still able to appreciate something about the work, whether it was the craft, the concept, or even the colour palettes, I could not find any piece which I disliked completely.
Amrei Hofstatter 102-103
Felt mistress 106
Sauerkids 172-175
These were the only artists I found who had work which did not appeal to me, due to personal likes and dislikes, that definitely not everyone will agree with. With Hofstatter, she created very detailed and symmetrical, geometric designs, personally I felt it was just too much for my eyes to process, however I still loved to colour palette and how each tone would compliment the other. In felt mistresses designs, which I have had the chance to view in person, I love how she transforms her characters from paper to 3D by just using felt, the only dislike I have for her work, is the fact that her creations remind me of the Muppet's, who of which I haven't been able to stand since I was much younger. The final artist, Sauerkids, created a portrait which was so expressive, that the character was not particularly visible anymore, but you could still make out the portrait. This was quite a creepy painting in my eyes, however I did enjoy that the design was so blurred, that it allows the audience to form their own imagery with their own mind, so that they can visualise the portrait.
My Opinion of the Publication
I think by now you will already know my opinion of this book, however if not, it is amazing! With the amount of diversity, within both the creations and the artists from around the world, this book is an endless supply of inspiration, and I will be referring back to it, even after I've left college. From this I do want to improve both my digital and traditional skills, I want to create more 3D designs, both by hand and digitally, and it is something I will explore in the future, thanks to this book. If and when I can, I will be buying more Pictoplasma books, and I can't wait to go to berlin next year to find out more about this company, the artists they publish and how they work.
