Compositing Evaluation

Final Products
With my final animations, I am very proud of how far I have progressed, considering how much I have despised working with 3D elements in the past. I feel the concepts and characters are very me, in the sense that they show what I enjoy, such as fantasy, myths, gods, psychics, ghosts etc.
If I were to make any improvements, I would just like to play around with more effects and/or overlays, this may have helped translate the specific themes better.
With my fortune-teller piece, I did want to try finding a texture to overlay against the video, as it might have given the scene a more magical look, but with time dwindling, it was hard to find one that I both liked and I could use for free.

Experience
Within this project, I have created two animations that show what I have learnt throughout this process, and believe they both communicate with my own personal interests.
When getting the brief for this project, I did feel quite worried for two reasons, one because we had to produce an animation,  and two, because we would have to make it multi-media and to me that immediately screamed 3D, which in the past, I have not enjoyed doing. However, once I had found the online tutorials, which showed me what I could create and gave me step-by-step instructions, I did become more confident and had fun creating my Viking character, and playing around with what I had learnt.
I believe I did experience issues with each tutorial I followed, but I enjoyed learning the new techniques, within programs I had not fully explored. I problem solved these issues by re-watching the tutorials more closely, searching for answers online, or if all else failed, I would ask my tutor for advice.

Strengths & Weaknesses
At the beginning of this project, I had initially dreaded using Cinema 4D again or making anything 3D, as it was not something I was confident with. However, as I followed more tutorials and experimented more with sculpting and materials in the program, I gradually gained more confidence in my ability to build something within Cinema 4D. The idea of possibly using the program again in a future project no longer seems as daunting as it was in the beginning. I believe through this project, I have taken something that I felt would be my biggest weakness, developed my skills and understanding of the program further, and I feel my Viking character has become one of my strongest pieces in this project.
At this moment in time, I do not have a great opinion on After Effects, but I feel I do still need to practise and play around with it more. Although I do believe you could make some beautiful animations in this program, I do not believe I will be using it again anytime soon, especially when using my own footage.
At the end of this project, my biggest regret has been my timing. Since I had left it so late to start animating my characters, I had missed the chance to enter in the #CharacterStareDown competition, which was my main inspiration when creating my characters. So when I found out I had missed the deadline date, I just felt disappointed in myself that I had not created the animations in time. Although I do claim responsibility for this, it may not have been my fault completely, as I do not recall Pictoplasma ever stating a due date for all of the entries, until a week before it was about to end.

SMART Targets
In the future, I do want to try using cinema 4D more often in my work. I feel it has been good to me during this project and I want to see what else I can create. I may also use it for my hand-drawn work, as I believe it could help me achieve better proportions/perspective in my illustrations, if I were to roughly build the scene in 3D, then add in the details by hand.
I do also want to try compositing more, but instead of working with footage I have filmed, as I want to take a break from that for a while, I want to try incorporating characters or elements into photos I have taken instead. I believe I could create some interesting stories by doing this, especially if I were to take photos of smaller areas and show the characters living amongst the space.
In comparison to previous projects, I think I have done

a good job at staying organised and I want it to carry on through future projects as well. Overall, I have felt much calmer during this process, as opposed to how I have been in the past. Although I am still working on keeping my motivation levels high, I do still try to keep on track, writing everything down from the lessons, keeping note of my what I have done/what still needs to be done, and during this project I’ve been regularly screenshotting, which has highly benefited my ‘making of’ guide. I do wish to keep this type of organisation throughout future projects, as I feel it will allow me to stay less stressed, and possibly keep me more motivated.
