Zine Class with Nil and Amy

Today I took part in a zine workshop with Nil and Amy, two previous students from this course, who now work as freelance illustrators.

Together they showed the class how to make a handmade zine, with a diagram showing the folds and cuts you would need to make, then we took our sketches then printed them with the risograph, using only two colours. I assume this is a method that they may have used back in the day for zines or comic book strips.

I first started this process my folding my paper in the way the diagram had shown, then I numbered the pages, so I'd have an idea of where to draw each image and what way around, for them to all be in order. I then started sketching my imagery roughly and in pencil. I have been recently looking and collecting images of flora within a Pinterest board, so this morning I just wanted to translate my recent research and draw some fungi, I then chose to make the name a pun, which would also mislead the reader slightly, by calling it 'Fun Guys'.

Once I had a basic sketch down, I went to the lightbox and started drawing out the layer that would print black on the riso. I tried to make stripy patterns in the spaces of the shadows, as I didn't want them to appear too blocky.

When I had completed the design for the black layer, whilst still using the lightbox, I place another sheet of paper on top of the linework, then with a pencil, I started shading in all of the areas of where I'd want colour, as this piece would print out pink on the riso.
Although the pink did not print as strong as I first though it would, I am still happy with the outcome, as the colours are more subtle as opposed to the rest of the zines created by the class.

As I have worked with the riso previously, I did enjoy this class, as it gave me a new perspective of the imagery I could create with it, so I am excited to use it more often in future projects. In the future, I would also like to try creating more zines, but I would possibly like to try creating more that have a narrative to them, so when you are flipping the pages, you can be following a story.
