Final Projects 3rd April 2018

Work I've done so far:

Work-based Learning

My concept for the Tangled Tales brief...
With the theme of 'Tangled' for the Cheltenham Illustration Awards, my idea was to illustrate the feeling of anxiety and overthinking. Personally, when my mind starts overthinking, it can often feel messy, as if I have two people in my head, one who is tangling up all of my thoughts, and the other who tries to clean the mess, but can not necessarily help the issue.
My idea is to take the theme of tangled quite literally and embroider my designs. In one image, I will show a 'normal' brain, which will look neat and the typical flow and form of the brain, but in the other brain, I want it to appear messier, with some of the stitches being pulled out and tangled with other loose threads.
So far with this concept, I have...

  • Sketched my initial designs
  • Created a proposal and treatment for the brief
  • Taken photos of myself and another model
  • Outlined the placement of the brain in illustrator
  • Positioned the outlines onto the photos
  • Transferred these photos to fabric
  • Given this fabric to my mother, as well as thread and embroidery hoops. so that she can sew the design. This step was discussed with my tutor, as he suggested that if he felt she would do a better job than myself, that I should let her, as I don't have as much experience with the medium as she does, and I don't really have a lot of time to learn as there is so much to do over these few projects
  • So as of this minute, this part of the project is quite literally out of my hands
Rabbit Reloaded - Pictoplasma
I believe I have fully completed this task within the space of three days. As I had a full weekend free as my slot for the print room, to make my prints for the Tangled Tales brief, was on the following Monday, I decided it would be the best time to focus solely on this brief so I could get it out of the way.

  • Thursday, I started sketching multiple bunnies, typically trying to stay away from the 'norm' and created some hybrids/surrealistic characters.
  • Friday, I narrowed down my favourites from the sketches. I chose the alien bunny, the lamp rabbit and the fish-rabbit, swan-bunny hybrids. I took all of the sketches into photoshop then started to resketch and adjust some of the original proportions.
  • Saturday, I started creating the linework for each of the refined sketches in Illustrator. I then took the alien bunny into photoshop to start colouring him. I knew I wanted the bunny to appear quite smooth as he was an alien and I did not imagine him to have fur, so I focused more of the textural elements on the galaxy background. (I also created the linework of the brain for the Tangled Tales brief on this day, so I did not have enough time to work on another rabbit)
  • Sunday, I finished off colouring each of the other bunnies. These were all ready to submit, but I still wanted a final check with my tutor to make sure the designs weren't too weird, etc.
  • Tuesday morning, I checked with my tutor if the designs were alright, we both agreed to remove the lamp bunny (as it was too creepy), then I submitted my final 3 rabbits to Pictoplasma.
  • As of this moment, my alien rabbit is the most viewed and liked out of my three posts, and has 3 likes and 375 views.

PPD

As of my progress within the PPD project, so far I have completed a Skills Report, in which I have assessed all of my skills and compared/contrasted them to some of which would be required within certain jobs, for instance, illustrator, graphic designer, animation in-betweener, etc. This has allowed me to visibly see which jobs would be more suited to my skills, and any areas I may need to improve on for future employment.

For this brief, I have also started thinking about business cards. I do want to send the design for these cards to print, together with my portfolio book, as I want both to come in time for my hand in deadline, and in time for the final show, that we will have to set up. As of the possible design, I have put together lots of examples of other artists cards, into one Pinterest board. This has helped me understand what information is needed, and what I can create in order for my card to catch a passerby’s attention, I.e. bright colours, patterns, I need to make sure it’s readable, and overall, I need to make sure the design fits with the rest of my work, style and ultimately advertises me well as an artist.

Portfolio Work

So far, with both portfolios (the book and the handheld version) I have:

  • Looked at examples of previous students portfolio books
  • Put together a file of the previous project and personal work I have created - my tutor has since gone through and helped me refine the selection and made suggestions of improvement with specific pieces, for example, taking off the watermarks which I had put on when posting my work on social media.
  • I have examined the work which I have together already, and I have started planning designs that may show more skills in the areas where I may lack, for instance, environments, character design, anatomy, sketches/experimentation, and I have even planned to refine one of my ideas from a previous project, in which I chose to leave at the time, but want to take forward now.
  • I also believe my work with the live briefs can also be contributed to my portfolio, as well as the designs I create for the business cards. This will mean that I will also have my Rabbits Reloaded, Tangled Tales and business card designs, all included in my portfolio.

To do list for this week:

  • Reseach into the industry, i.e. practitioners, companies, what I need to know to get started with my own work, etc.
  • Create the designs for the business cards
  • Keep more up to date with Blogging, next post should be made a week from now at the latest.
  • Create the content for the portfolio from each of my planned sketches
  • Make sure that my mother is staying on track with the work I have given her, making sure she is working on the embroidery to my deadlines.
