Local and National Illustration Companies

Local Companies
This is a Gateshead/Newcastle based branding and advertising company, who have worked with a lot of local clients, both small and big, such as Newcastle United, Northumbria University, Jesmond three sixty, The Steam Machine Brewery, etc.
Although a lot of Altogether’s work can appear more suited to the graphic design area, meaning that it is more informative as oppose to narrative based, they have also created some illustrative pieces for companies, as seen to the left with Steam Machine Brewery and Jesmond Three Sixty. I feel these designs still fit with the graphic style of their portfolio, as their illustration designs are very clean, simple, readable and still communicates the brand/product/event that they are working for.
Their work in general is quite playful and eye catching with their use of colours, which are quite pastel, but still vibrant. I believe in some of their pieces, they have taken a subject which can usually sound quite boring, but have given it a new lease of life, making it seem more fun than it might be, an example of this could be with the designs they had created for Northumbria University’s Student Surveys. I don’t particularly find my own colleges surveys to be interesting, they’re quick and easy to do, but then they’re done, and I forget about them until the next time I have to do one. These designs to the right however, make it look more fun to complete these surveys, almost as if they are a game of some sort. I don’t know if Northumbria’s student surveys are the same as Newcastle College, however if I saw these advertisements, I feel I would be more interested to do them on my own time, rather than a teacher coming in and asking for the students to do them.
As this company is very local (they are based in the Baltic 39 Studios), if I were to go into a more commercial route with my career, this could possibly be an option for me. I would however want to work on some of the more illustrative briefs that the company is given, as I feel I may lack knowledge within graphic design/typography standards, at this current moment in time.

These are a worldwide Digital Arts and Design Company, who are based in Gateshead/Newcastle, but also have a place within Vancouver, Canada. When looking on their website at their portfolio, I found they create work with motion graphics, UI/UX design, but what I felt more interested in, or thought I would be more capable of creating myself, was their marketing art, and their concept art and product designs.
Their Concept Art/Product Design group includes: characters, action shots, environments and props.
And their Marketing Art group includes: logos, tv advertisements, online content, box art and merchandise design.
The majority of Atom Hawks clients are game based, so the likes of Sony, Ubisoft, Warner Bro’s etc. Some notable things they have worked with have been Dead Island, Mortal Combat and they even created concept art for the spacecrafts that were used within Guardians of the Galaxy.
I believe their target audience will be dependant on their clients specific audience, for instance, their work with Marvel will apply to a huge premade fan-base who follow the marvel franchise, which possibly has an age range from 10-30, but their work with Deep Silver on Dead Island, would be smaller as it would have an 18+ age range, due to the fact it is a horror based game which does include violence. But I believe a common target market of Atom Hawks audience will be gamer based, I assume mostly male due to stereotypes, (however these stereotypes are slowly being broken as more women are now playing) and the age range can be from 13-35. Again, these are all dependant on the specific client’s audiences, showing that Atom Hawk is quite flexible their work.
Although I am in love with the companies concept art, and they are currently advertising a job for a concept artist who will work in their Gateshead/Newcastle based studio, I do not feel I’m personally suited to this job, as the art seems too 3D/realistic, which is a style that I do not believe I can recreate myself, at least not currently. This could be a possibility in the future, if I were to learn more about digital painting, or creating 3D characters/environments/props, within specific programs like z-brush, or cinema 4D, etc.

National Companies
This is an Agency which only represents 35 illustrators. Each artist has a unique style and specialises in advertising, design and/or publishing.
The company does seem very close-knit with each other, which is one of the reasons why they only represent a few artists, in comparison to other illustration agencies. When they find an artist they like, they make sure that they build up the personal relationship between them, so essentially the artist can feel comfortable with them, and vice versa. To me the agency seems very family orientated (considering the two owners are cousins, and the name Frank came from their Granddad), and I would love to be a part of it if I could, as I feel they would be more of a friendly/helpful/hands on agency, whereas others may be colder, and I imagine they may be more distracted if they have more artists.
On their website, it does say that since they already have such a close-knit group of amazing artists, all who have their own individual styles, they don’t really go out looking for more artists. However, if you personally felt that your work/style is unique and something that they don’t have already, then you can send in your portfolio for them to have a look at.
Although they do seem like a small company, their clients have still gotten to work with huge brands such as, Google, Coca-Cola, Vogue, BBC, etc.

This is an agency which represents a wide range of artists from painters to animators etc. They are a company based in London, who have worked with clients worldwide, such as, HBO, National Trust, Google, Apple, etc.
In comparison to Handsome Frank, this agency has many more artists, so they are more open to viewing more artists and illustrator’s portfolios for possible representation (if you follow the guidelines they have given). However, as they do have more artists, I feel there is more chance that some artists styles may be similar to one another, so when a client comes to the agency, do they give the brief to just one artist, or do they give them to multiple artists who may have a similar style? If it was the second option, then I feel you would be in constant competition with artists from the agency.
But as Handsome Frank is a much harder agency to be represented by, I feel any agency which will help promote me and my work, and will inevitably helps me gain more work, is good enough for me. So here are other notable agencies in which I can think about and possibly apply to at a later date…
