Commercial Illustration

Over the past two years, I have worked digitally in nearly every project, if not all. From looking over my portfolio, I can see improvements, whether it’s just progression of my basic fundamental skills, gaining more knowledge and becoming more comfortable with the programs I use, or if I have just gained a higher expectation for the standard of my work, all in all, I am happy with how I am with the progression of my work.
I do believe I have a wide variety of content within my portfolio, including commercial work, patterns, narrative illustrations, experimentations, character designs, 3D characters, tattoo designs, animation frames, traditional prints, etc. So, if a potential client were to look through my work, I hope that they would be able to find something that could fit their brief, even if everything else does not.
What is the purpose?
I am a versatile artist and I believe I can work to any brief, making it my own and I am always willing to work and improve from critiques. I believe I have shown this through my portfolio, throughout each project that I have completed so far.
What have I achieved?
Before starting the course, I did not have too much experience working with a tablet, I did have basic knowledge within photoshop, but not to the extent I have today. So, since the start of this course, my tablet has become my prized possession, and as I had mentioned previously, I have been working digitally for the majority of my projects, if not all. Another contributor to my digital work has been Illustrator; I believe in all of my projects, I have used illustrator to create the linework of the specific piece. As I have not been very confident with my linework (but am currently trying to rectify that issue), Illustrator has been a god’s gift, allowing me to create smooth and controlled lines, without worrying if I make a mistake because I can always correct them as nothing is permanent.
Also, since starting this course I believe I have gained slightly more confidence in drawing characters/faces. This may be due to the fact I know I can rectify my mistakes digitally, but when doing the human studies for my portfolio, I didn’t feel the need to make any corrections as I was happy with the raw sketch appearance. Obviously, some of the proportions are still a bit off, especially with the figure drawings, but I do feel I have improved since starting the course.
My wishes for the future?
After looking over my portfolio as a whole, I feel the route my work is currently taking can be seen with my queen illustrations and my digital painting experimentations. I want to work more traditional, but still keep my digital elements close at bay.
For my final show, I want to create a sequential illustration which will explore quite a few different environments. I think I either want to use watercolour or pencil and create the whole piece in black and white by hand, then once I have scanned each panel in, I will then colour it digitally.
With this final piece, I do feel I will be checking off areas that may be lacking within my portfolio, such as traditional mediums, environments and sequential illustrations, which I have been trying to avoid because I have never been confident with drawing the same character in different angles, or in a specific setting, as I usually get my perspective or proportions wrong. But, as I have said, I will be using this final show to face all my fears, and as a way to rectify all of my issues or areas of my portfolio where I may be lacking.
In the next year of this course, I do want to carry on down this commercial route, as I do enjoy getting new briefs, seeing how far I can go with them, then working together with clients. I hope that this last year will prepare me more for the world of work, once I do finally leave the comfort zone that is college and begin my own career.
