So far, as I forgot to post for a couple of weeks when starting this project, I have decided to write about everything that I have done and created up until this point.
Firstly I have created a moodboard, this was to give myself a better understanding of what I could create, what imagery I could use and the type of paintings which I would like to recreate. From this I decided to create surrealistic designs using digital collage then draw over the layout in the style of Tomer Hanuka. This I felt would give my piece its surrealist edge, but I would make the overall appearance more uniform by redrawing the design, taking away the cut and paste style in which collaging creates.
From this I created thumbnail sketches of what I could add or take away from the original paintings to make the pieces more surreal. I had tried turning Marie Antoinette into the bride of Frankenstein, making the buds of Van Goghs 'Sunflower' painting into cats heads and I even placed 'the girl with the pearl earring on the moon with a space helmet.
With the final designs, I started to make digital collage mock ups of what I wanted to create, using images I found on google. This helped me narrow down my original thumbnail sketches as I could see which ones had and would work better than others. From here I started roughly outlining and colouring the pieces, using the collages as a base. Once I had done this for all of the mock ups, I had narrowed my choice to three possible designs and asked both my tutor and friends which they thought would work the best for my final design. Everyone had agreed that my piece of Grant Woods 'American Gothic' underwater would work best with my style and intentions.
I am currently starting to create my line work in illustrator for my final design. As I am creating my line work from a painting, at times I do find it difficult to find exactly where to line and not, this is especially a problem within the face as the lines are so soft and I do not want to over line every nook and cranny.
I have also started on my artist research file, at the moment I am only searching into the companies and their artists, looking for examples which appeal to me or I relate to with how they work or what they enjoy creating. I want to find all of my examples before I start writing so that I can do it all in bulk rather than going back and forth between websites and word document.
My targets in which I want to complete by this weekend, Sunday the 2nd of April, are:
